St. John's
We got into St. Johns around 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 23rd. We drove into the city and was really in city shock. After a month of small towns, this is a city. Traffic and crowded streets. It has small streets, changing into one way and under construction every where. We tried to find the visitor's center and by the time we got there it was closed. I guess you need to see it, but never drive there. It's also a harbor town so that it's just small shops and pubs all along the main street. I was really disappointed since this was not our thing.
The next day, we discovered the area around the city. We visited Cape Spear, the eastern most point of North America. We did go back downtown just to see the Russian tall ship Kruzenshtern that docked that morning. Next we went to Signal Hill. The picture on the side here is a picture of downtown St. John's from Signal Hill. St. John's has a trail system that spans all across the city. We could actually walk trails from our campsite to Signal Hill, the harbor, and downtown. Signal Hill is approx. 650 ft. elevation. We did the North Trail around Signal Hill, supposedly it was only at the most 3 miles, but took 3 hours to hike.
I'd been wanting to Kayak, but we just hadn't had time, so on Saturday morning we drove over to Cape Broyle to do this. We've only tried Kayaking one time for about 5 minutes in La Conner, so wanted to take a guided trip the first time out. We took a 2 1/2 hr. trip. Really enjoyed it but didn't really see any whales, puffins or other sea life.
After the trip, we took the coastline to Ferryland. We visited the Lighthouse there, which of course had to be hiked up to. It was absolutely one of the most beautiful views we've seen.

We sat for probably an hour or more and hiked around the penisula in order to follow the whales. This tail was seen from the cliff we sat on.
So we did see some wild life that day. Today, it's raining and we're catching up on things. I decided to get my walk in and took off on one of the trails from the park. A little over an hour later, I made my way back. Next time, I'll take the GPS or a map.
