Extended Stay

Well, this was going to be my last blog from Newfoundland since we were scheduled to depart from Argentia at 4:00 pm tomorrow to arrive in North Sydney, NS at 6:00 AM on Friday, July 31st. Quess What? They've cancelled our sailing and we have to drive 510 miles to Port Aux Basques for our ferry ride. Evidently they had a fire on the newest ferry and have had to reshedule everyone. Just our luck. On Well, that's the RV lifestyle. On our last day in St. John's , we went over to part of the East Coast Trail for a little hike. (Just about 9 miles) The blueberries are starting to ripen. I ate a few along the trail.

Here's a picture of Bob from the top of our hike.

and a picture of me on the trail.
As you can see, what goes up must come down.

Here's one of the beautiful waterfalls along the way. I can't get pictures of all of the area, but I must tell you. If what you enjoy in life is nature and hiking, Newfoundland is the place to go. It's been a marlevous place with such diverse areas. Every lookout to the ocean today gave us whale sitings. You can't get it on film, but you can remember it. We even saw a puffin out on the water.

Yesterday it was rainy, but once you got away from St. John's, it was not sunny, but you could get out. We chanced upon the coming in of the catlin's at Middle Cove. The coming in of the catlin's is the life of the island. The whales, the seals, and fishing depend on the catlin's. A small fish that all of the above feed on. It's kind of the life link to holding things together. People do eat it dried and salted whole and some clean it and broil it. But mostly, it's the bait for the fish (that's cod, because anything else is called by it's name. If it's a fish, It's cod.
Everybody in town comes down to get their share of catlin. Here you can see. All you need is a bucket or a net. It's a party in itself.
Well, hope we get back, but I'm not really upset that we have a couple of more days in Newfoundland.
