Devil's Tower
We started the day on Saturday early in order to get over to Sundance, Wy. Only 85 miles or so. We wanted to explore that area. Devil's Tower. After we got the rig bedded down , around 10 o'clock am. We headed out. First to the Vore Buffalo Jump. The Vore family owned property next to Highway 90. When they were building the highway, they were going to fill in a sinkhole and had to check to see if it was stable. In doing so, they discovered Buffalo Bones on top of Buffalo Bones. The Indians had used the sinkhole as a jump into which they herded the buffalo. They would then use all the usable parts and leave the excess bones there. This was used for several hundred years. As the dirt refilled the sinkhole, each strata of bones were preserved in cross sections.
The first picture is of prairie dogs in the Devil's Tower National Park. The second is from the Vore Buffalo Site.
Next is the Devils Tower and a view from the base of the Devils Tower. There were only 4 climbers there since June is a Voluntary Non-Climb Month. The Indians regard Devils Tower as a sacred place. Most tribes refer to it as Bear Lodge, or some other Bear name. The leader of one of the expeditions by the US Government named it Devils Tower. There has been legal actions by the Indians to rename it to the original name, but to no success. The month of June is traditionally a month with many sacred ceremonies and out of respect for the American Indian it was requested that climber do not climb the Tower during this month. Of course, non-indians say, it's public land I'll climb if I want to.
After Vore we went to eat at Cindy B's Cafe in Aladdin, Wy. Population 15. All 15 were there. The food was great. I ordered a Grilled Ham and Cheese sandwich. Didn't need a 1/2 pound hamburger. However, there was a Ham steak on my sandwich and 1/2 pound of Velveeta. It was fantastic on homemade sourdough bread. Had homemade kettle fries with it. If you're ever in that area, remember Cindy B's.
