Heading back to Texas!

After getting back to Happy Trails, we had to move up our trip to Texas.  My Daughter, Dee’s, friend passed away from cancer and we had to get to her in Texarkana for mommy love.  We had planned a leisurely trip starting  on April 30th, going to Silver City, NM for a couple of days and then down to Big Bend for a week. Then moseying over to South Padre for a family get together on May 12th-17th. After that to Austin and then to Texarkana.  Instead, we left on April 27th, and made the trip with only 2 nights out.  Long days and lots of wind.  One good thing was that I got there to be with Dee.  We found a great Corps of Engineer park on Wright Patnum  Lake just 7 miles from my daughters’ place.

We had a large space on the water with a wooden deck overlooking the grass going down to the water.  The best part was since it was a Corps of Engineer Park, it was only $13.00 a night. 50 electric and water, no sewer, but a dump nearby.  We ended up staying 6 nights and actually had a day to kayak.

I am really proud of how Dee is handling being alone for the first time in her life. She’s always lived with someone.
After there, we headed down to South Padre Island, another 700 miles away. We got there on Wednesday instead of Friday and stayed at the Isla Blanca County Park. Nice with a view of the ocean.  We had great weather (although windy) Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The seaweed is terrible down there and the workers had cleared it completely up on Friday.  Then we had a rocking and rolling storm Friday night and Saturday morning, the beach was covered again. It didn’t stop all the families from coming down for the weekend. On Sunday, the winds had died down some, so we headed to Kayak one of the Texas Paddle Trails. We had to cross an open water area, so I was a little nervous.  It was no problem, but after about 2 hours out, we finally made it to the cut to cross over to the trail and the winds came up as we rounded the corner and decided to head back. Got a lot of arm exercise fighting the wind. 100_0004
My 2 sisters, their spouses and my brother got there Monday afternoon. We had walked down to the condo on Saturday to check it out. It was 4 miles down the beach, so we put in an 8 mile walk.  That wasn’t bad since we had been walking everyday even in Texarkana.
After everyone got there, we did our normal fun time of visiting, eating, and playing cards and since it was cold and rainy, we even played cards during the day since we couldn’t go to the beach.  It was great seeing everyone and having the time to really talk and be together.  IMG_1306
Back row: Dennis and Gladys, Brother Jim, and Anita and Stan.  Of course you know who’s on the front row.
On Friday, we all headed out early (Anita and Stan left on Thursday) to get to Anita’s son’s and his wife, Paul and Leigh, recommitment party and “Celebration of Paully kicking Cancer’s Ass” He had colon cancer and after all the chemo and radiation is cancer free. wedding pary
Paul and Leigh had their son, Logan and daughter Lily stand up for them.  It was a beautiful ceremony and the party afterwards was great. I got to see my nieces and nephews from sis Anita and even one from my sis Gladys.

It was a great time and we enjoyed the trip. But time to move on.  We had doctor appointments in AZ before leaving for the summer for our summer home in Star Valley, WY.
