Heading to Houston

On Thursday, March 29th, we met friends Bryon and Marsha and Melissa to trek across Arizona and New Mexico to Texas.  Later start than usual, around 9:30 am.  But on the road and made it to Safford for the night.  Able to get a walk in that night and also the next morning.  Bob didn't feel good on the way here, so just parked and went to bed.  Ok the next morning and ready to hit the road again.  Our goal was a National Forest Campground close to Glenwood, NM.  Made it.

Nice campground with 3 sites close together. Dry camping

Since we got there early, we set up camp and headed to Cat Walk Recreation Area just down the road. Beautiful area.

Some of the trail was a little difficult to get to
We then drove over to Mogollon.  A ghost town that was really a ghost town since it doesn't open until Memorial Day Weekend and then is only open on weekends.  We didn't do our research.

The next morning, we headed to Silver City, NM and the Gila Cliff Dwelling.  We stayed at the Elks, full hookups and all.  Was there by noon, so headed into town to tour and have lunch.

We met up with Wayne and Nancy Muggli here.  They had toured the Gila Cliff Dwellings that day, so were heading to our next stop the next morning.  We would tour the Dwellings in the morning and then meet them at Fayewood Hot Springs.

The next stop was Fayewood Hot Springs.  Since this was a clothing optional park and hot tubs, I didn't get pictures that we can use.  I was too busy in the hot tubs.

The morning of the 2nd of April, we head to Van Horn.  Bob and I, and Melissa left early to stop over in El Paso to get the rigs and cars inspected.  But as luck would have it the place was closed so we headed to Van Horn.  Lucked out and got everything inspected and in the RV park by early afternoon.  Since Us and the Muggli's were parting ways with Melissa and Bryon and Marsha the next morning, we all went to dinner that night.  Great little Mexican Food with good service.  Of course we were only ones there.

The next morning, Wayne and Nancy only made it as far as the exit at 7:00 am.  They like to hit the road early.  Only problem was they didn't make it to the road.  Problem with air brake system.  So, we all waited around until we knew they were going to be able to be fixed and on the road.  They headed northeast, we headed directly east and the rest headed south east.  It was fun traveling with friends, we are normally loners.

So on, by ourselves, we have 10 days to go just over 500 miles so we stop early at the Caverns of Sonora.  RV parking is a little tight, but the caverns are fantastic.  We've visited caves all over and this had some formations that I had never seen before.

It was like walking in an underwater coral reef without the fish.

After a night there it's on to Kerrville-Schreiner City Park . The last time we were here was in 2000, in our first trailer.  At that time it was much more primitive and was a State of Texas Park.  It was still beautiful but more developed.  There's a 4 mile walk/bike trail from the park to the opposite end of Kerrville.  Bob found a pool to take a swim in and I walked the trail.  Yes the whole trail.  Ended up being around 9 miles from campsite and back.  Not as much wild life as we'd seen before.

Just waiting on me

Beautiful country
Since we were only going 60 miles to Llano, we hiked another trail.  According to the map, different sections were relatively easy, moderately difficult, and difficult with steep inclines.  They must have rated these trails by seniors in walkers.  The whole trail was easy to moderate.  And taking the outside edges of all the loops, it was only a little of 4 miles.  Only took a little less than 2 hours.  We were able to hike and still pull out by noon.  The weather has turned cold  yesterday and this morning, and to us, because of the humidity, it's really colder.   We are in Llano at the city park for 3 nights, and were headed to Inks Lake State Park tomorrow, the 9th of April, but may be too cool to kayak.  May change plans and head straight to Magnolia and shop for a new jeep.  Won't know where we're going until we head out in the morning.
