Gunnison
Well, had to get back to the library since Bob’s got 2 tournaments next week and the tournament directors had some questions he needed to answer. On Saturday, we left Matterhorn and headed to Elk Creek National Forest Campground in the Curecanti National Recreation Area. Just electric, no water or sewer, and only enough internet for emails. When we got here on Saturday, we drove into Gunnison just about 15 miles up the road to check out laundries, there wasn’t a public laundry in Telluride, so we were running out of clothes.
Discovered an that Mesa RV had a public laundry mat and pickleball. Bob also needed to solve a problem with a tournament in SC, but we didn’t have time at the library that evening. The stopped at Pappy’s, a restaurant at the Elk Creek marina. Great little place to eat. Ran into a couple that stays in Apache Junction during the winter and their house is directly across the street from Dee Johnson. Small world. He’s learning to play pickleball here in Gunnison at their Community Center.
On Sunday, we went over the Mesa RV and some of the folks were playing, but of course, I’m still limited so didn’t participate. The couple that was teaching or helping winter in Mission Royal in Casa Grande and know John Grasso. Two days and 2 couples that winter in Arizona.
After the laundry, we drove up to Crested Butte to tour. Not much to tour in Crested Butte, consists of one main street with 3 or 4 blocks of shops, restaurants and bars. They were having a local festival for vendors, but this was also only in one block area.
At the entrance to town, there was a very interesting sculpture of metal.
On Monday, it was raining off and on, so we decided to drive over to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This canyon is the deepest canyon in Colorado and very narrow. We drove up to the North Rim.
On the way back, we took back roads, of course, and this was a great picture that I just had to share.
Since it was still raining and cold, after the morning in the library, we didn’t want to get the kayaks out, so we explored some of the forest “roads” in the Gunnison National Forest. Some beautiful scenery and finally, “Elk”
Wednesday, it started out cold and cloudy, but around noon, it cleared off “except for the smoke from a fire over in the West. So, we finally took the kayaks out to the “Bay of Chickens”.
You can tell the water’s down, the post on the top of the rocks behind me is a marker to let boater’s know where the rocks are.
Today, as I said, even though it’s gorgeous outside, only still in the 60’s since it’s only around 10:30 during my writing, we’ll be heading into Gunnison to post this and for Bob to talk to Roger about the Houston Tournament that’s in a week. We haven’t decided if we’re staying here until Sunday as planned, we’re thinking of leaving tomorrow and stay 2 nights in a full hookup park for 2 nights in order to clean the rig and clothes. We’re heading up around Steamboat Springs, hopefully away from the smoke. I’ll keep in touch.
